The sky rumbles viciously with a storm. The whole world is drenched in water, it seems, as the clouds spill down to the ground. Leaves tip with the weight of the water, and the dirt is mucky as it turns to mud and silt. All manner of creatures hide as well as they can, attempting to avoid getting wet.
Lightning strikes the ground, bubbling the mud with its heat and turning distant fields to flame. Thunder tails it like a child follows its mother, screaming into the empty air like a roaring beast, which there is an abundance of in this world.
A single stray lightning strike bashes into the ground, skirting across the water and breaching into the mud on the edges of the lake. Something miraculous happens, then. The lightning carries with it unusual energy. Some may call it coincidence, some divine, others supernatural. The mud transforms - grass becomes fur and whisker, pebbles become pawpads, and noses, and eyes; wide leaves turn to ears. One by one, midsized creatures come to life, from lumps of lifeless nothing to sudden awareness.
Now they are by the lake, newly born and inexperienced. Their future is uncertain; their survival unspecified. Will they go from 20 individuals to the most successful species on this planet, or will they die out without being given a chance?
Only you can make that distinction.
